Al Shabaab ‘s Activity in Somalia
From 7 to 9 January 2025, Al Shabaab conducted multiple attacks targeting the regional states of South West and Hirshabelle. These operations included IED strikes on Ugandan military convoys, coordinated ground assaults on Somali National Army (SNA) positions, and a reported attack on an aircraft at Wajid Airport.
Al Shabaab suffered significant losses following a U.S. airstrike in Beer Xaani, Somalia, 35 kilometers northwest of Cooperative Security Location Kismayo. The strike neutralised 10 Al Shabaab fighters preparing for an imminent attack, significantly degrading the group’s operational capabilities. Puntland forces also detained two Al Shabaab operatives in Bosaso, found in possession of explosives and weapons.
Local reports have also highlighted increasing concerns over Al Shabaab’s activities in the Gedo Region. The group is reported to be establishing new bases near Garbaharey, Gedo, raising alarms about the potential for future bomb-laden vehicle attacks emanating from the area.
